SUMMARY:Seagrass Loss and Restoration: Case Studies from the Indo-Pacific Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Open Communications for the Ocean (with support from the NOAA National MPA Center)\nSeagrass meadows are vital to food security\, livelihoods\, and coastal resilience across the Indo-Pacific. They provide gleaning and small-scale fishing opportunities for the region’s most food-insecure households\, as well as essential habitat for commercial fisheries. They also protect coastal communities by reducing wave energy and erosion\, buffering storm surges\, stabilizing sediments\, and filtering pollutants\, pathogens\, and excess nutrients to improve water quality. \nGreater Southeast Asian has the largest global extent of tropical seagrass\, but over half is degraded. Restoration projects are underway across the region\, with varying degrees of success. A recent synthesis of this work identified several factors—including species\, restoration methods\, light levels\, wave energy\, and water depth—that are associated with greater survival and establishment of restored seagrass. \nIn this webinar seagrass restoration experts Dr. Rohani Ambo-Rappe and Dr. Jennifer Verduin will share lessons from two of the most extensive and well-studied seagrass restoration programs in the region\, including: \n• The use of simple\, low-cost restoration methods in the Spermonde Archipelago\, South Sulawesi\, Indonesia \n• Work to replant foundational seagrass species in partnership with Indigenous traditional owners in Shark Bay\, Western Australia. \nThe presenters will discuss why seagrass loss occurred\, describe the restoration approaches used and their successes and challenges\, and share lessons learned about what works\, what doesn’t\, and why. The webinar will conclude with a live Q&A\, providing attendees an opportunity to ask the presenters questions. \nSubtitles will be available in over 30 languages.

Set in Wales\, the United States\, and Denmark\, the presentations explore how community groups\, conservation professionals\, volunteers\, and public-private partnerships are restoring vulnerable landscapes while strengthening biodiversity\, climate resilience\, and the connections between people and nature. \nThe featured projects span a reclaimed 35-acre wildlife site in Newport\, the restoration of a heavily visited oak forest in Iowa\, and heathland conservation in Denmark’s Wadden Sea National Park. Together\, they address challenges including historic fly-tipping\, invasive species\, changing forest composition\, habitat encroachment\, and altered water levels. \nSpeakers will share the history and ecological context of their sites\, the practical actions taken\, the outcomes achieved\, and the lessons emerging from several years of sustained restoration work. Community Voice Method (CVM) is a holistic and inclusive way of stimulating more meaningful and equitable community engagement in natural resource policy development\, decision-making and management. Engaging with community members in a way that seeks their views and encourages discussion on marine issues\, CVM combines arts-based social research with best practice in stakeholder engagement to deliver insights and conversations which can support positive\, constructive\, and enduring relationships and improved outcomes for people and nature. \nThis webinar will present an overview of this film-based transdisciplinary approach\, its origin\, its application within the context of the UK and the Caribbean UK Overseas Territories\, and its impact on people and nature. In addition\, the webinar will feature an existing project in the Turks and Caicos where significant resources are being applied to the upskilling of local partners on the method\, reducing the territory’s reliance on external researchers and resulting in a more locally-led project.

DESCRIPTION:The Blue Carbon Initiative\nThe International Blue Carbon Scientific Working Group (IBCSWG) will hold the 18th annual meeting in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Canada on September 14-17\, 2026. The IBCSWG meeting will be co-hosted by our partners\, WWF-Canada\, the Community Eelgrass Restoration Initiative and the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq. Participants will include Canadian\, regional\, and global scientists and partners. \nThe IBCSWG meeting will focus on current scientific issues related to blue carbon’s role in climate action and what new information is needed to integrate blue carbon science in policymaking processes worldwide. \nWith the world’s longest coastline\, measuring over 240\,000 kilometers and spanning three oceans\, Canada is home to the longest extent of blue carbon ecosystems. Given the unique importance of coastal wetlands\, kelp and eelgrass ecosystems to Canada\, the meeting will provide an opportunity for the Working Group to coordinate blue carbon science\, policy and project development in Canada as well as learn from and empower local Indigenous voices. This coordination extends beyond academia and will include Indigenous organizations\, communities\, and individuals who have been the stewards of these ecosystems since time immemorial.
