Coastal Habitats Hub

COASTAL HABITATS HUB

CONNECTING SCIENCE, PEOPLE & KNOWLEDGE

Welcome

The Coastal Habitats Learning and Knowledge Hub (a.k.a. “Coastal Habitats Hub”) is a national initiative covering three coasts, three habitats (salt marshes, seagrass and kelp forests) and working toward three goals.

Enable people and practitioners

Support coordination, knowledge sharing and training coast to coast to coast

Protect and restore coastal habitats

Provide research and tools to advance coastal monitoring, stewardship and restoration

Cultivate solutions to climate change

Bring together information, resources and knowledge on nature-based climate solutions in coastal ecosystems

Upcoming Hub Events

Kelp Node | Canopy Kelp Spatial Dynamics
Bring together information and knowledge on kelp remote sensing methodologies and the spatial dynamics of floating canopy kelps, with application to spatial planning and management in BC and WA. Hosted by Kelp Node.
Kelp | Sub-tidal Kelp
Document, compare, and ensure interoperability of methods and metrics associated with subtidal monitoring (e.g., SCUBA, remotely operated vehicle, drop camera) of kelp forests in BC and WA, identifying gaps and opportunities.
Kelp Node | Kelp Drivers of Change
Document, compile, synthesize, and analyze the multiple ecological and environmental drivers of change in kelps in the transboundary waters of BC and WA. Understand the impacts of cumulative stress factors on kelp health and distribution.

Coastal Habitats Launch Event

In November 2025, WWF-Canada, in partnership with the Hakai Institute, University of Victoria, McGill University, and the Restore, Assert, Defend (RAD) Network, launched the Coastal Habitats Learning and Knowledge Hub to support coastal nature-based climate solutions learning and knowledge mobilization. Hear about ongoing work under the Hub and opportunities for connecting and collaboration.

Permitting and Regulatory Barriers to Coastal Habitat Restoration

In January 2026, WWF-Canada, in partnership with the Hakai Institute, University of Victoria, McGill University, and the Restore, Assert, Defend (RAD) Network, hosted a webinar under the Coastal Habitats Learning and Knowledge Hub focused on permitting and regulatory barriers.
