The Mysterious World of Bull Kelp

The Mysterious World of Bull Kelp

The Mysterious World of Bull Kelp is an illustrated, science-grounded webstory produced by Above/Below. The site explores the ecology, biodiversity, cultural significance, and restoration of bull kelp forests across the North Pacific coast from Alaska to California, with a dedicated British Columbia regional section. The site weaves art and science together across five major sections:

  • Kelp As Kin (relational and Indigenous perspective of kelp as kin rather than resource)
  • Kelp Forest Community (illustrated species profiles for all key members of the bull kelp ecosystem)
  • Regional Stories (ecology, status, and restoration efforts by region, including BC)
  • Kelp Restoration (methods, strategies, aquaculture, and case studies)
  • Resources (regional resources and links).

Above/Below’s mission is to bring a broad coalition into the emerging movement of kelp forest recovery changing policy, supporting restoration, growing local blue economies, and inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards.
